Songwriting


The Songwriting course is designed to give students the skills and knowledge needed to write their own songs. Topics covered in this course include: lyrics, melody, harmony, and song structure. Students will learn how to create and develop musical ideas, and how to use music notation software to create scores. This course is suitable for students with little or no experience in songwriting, as well as for those looking to improve their skills.

Topics covered in this course include:

  • Lyrics: Learn about different forms of lyrics, such as verse-chorus-bridge, and how to create meaningful and impactful lyrics that tell a story or convey a message.

  • Melody: Elements of melody, such as pitch, rhythm, and phrasing, and how to create memorable and effective melodies.

  • Harmony: Students will learn about chords and chord progressions, and how to use them to create interesting and dynamic harmonic structures.

  • Song structure: Learn the sections of a song, such as the verse, chorus, and bridge, and how to use them to create a cohesive and engaging song.

  • Musical ideas: Generate and develop musical ideas, and how to use various songwriting tools and techniques to turn those ideas into a finished song.

  • Music notation software: Use music notation software to create scores and sheet music for their songs.

  • Collaboration: Students will learn about the different aspects of working with other songwriters, including co-writing, feedback and critique.

  • Music industry: Students will learn about the different aspects of the music industry, such as publishing, copyright, and song registration.

  • Writing for different genres and styles of music
  • Incorporating different instrumentation and arrangement techniques
  • Music production and recording techniques for songwriting
  • Analysis and critique of existing songs to understand the elements of successful songwriting
  • Workshopping and feedback sessions for students to share and receive feedback on their own songwriting

By the end of the course, students will have the skills and knowledge needed to write their own songs, and will have the opportunity to share and perform their work in class.
