Music Theory


This course is designed to give students a comprehensive understanding of the fundamental concepts and techniques of music theory. Topics covered in this course include: notation, scales, intervals, chords, harmony, and melody. Additionally, students will study various musical styles such as classical, jazz, and popular music, and learn how to apply music theory concepts to the analysis and composition of music.

Topics covered will include:

  • Pitch and notation: Read and write music notation, and understand the concepts of pitch, rhythm, and meter.

  • Scales and modes: Learn about the various types of scales, including major and minor, and the modes derived from them, such as Dorian, Phrygian, and Mixolydian.

  • Intervals: Explore the different types of intervals and how they relate to one another.

  • Chords and harmony: Students will learn about the construction of chords and how they are used in harmony.

  • Melody and counterpoint: Study the principles of melody writing and counterpoint, including the use of motifs, phrases, and cadences.

  • Musical analysis: Students will analyze a piece of music, identifying the key, form, and harmony.

  • Musical composition: Learn how to compose a piece of music, using the principles of music theory.

  • Music history: Students will study the history of music from the ancient world to the present day and learn about the various styles and genres that have developed over time.
